AAR SOPAC, Invernomuto vs Alias, Allied side

28 Maggio 1942

Continuano gli "scambi di cortesie" tra aviatori americani e giapponesi. Anche oggi i miei caccia non si sono levati in volo per scortare i miei bombardieri. Per fortuna i robusti bombardieri americani non patiscono la CAP avversaria come quelli giapponesi. Il risultato è comunque stato deludente per quanto mi riguarda. Solo una bomba a segno su un cacciatorpediniere giapponese. I giapponesi nel frattempo sono sbarcati a Gili Gili, come previsto. Il quantitativo di truppe sbarcate sembra ingente, possibile che l'alto comando giapponese abbia intenzione di arrivare a PM via terra? Perché non prendersi Buma a questo scopo?
Sono due le portaerei giapponei in zona e ho deciso di non rischiare ancora un ingaggio con le mie.

La partita si sta decisamente scaldando. Il 29 le mie unità sottomarine hanno tentato il colpaccio. Il Grayback ha inquadrato nel periscopio una grossa nave da guerra giapponese, la modernissima Yamato. I siluri hanno mancato e la sorte del sottomarino è stata segnata...

E Gili Gili diventa nipponica


Il 30 decido di rompere gli indugi e muovere le mie portaerei, alla fonda a Cairns. Prima però sostituisco Fitch con Halsey alla guida del mio gruppo portaerei. Imposto la rotta a 120 miglia a ovest di Gili Gili, nella speranza di prendere di sorpresa le portaerei giapponesi. La CAP giapponese è lieve ed ha subito un po' di attrito in questi giorni di combattimenti. Succede il finimondo: un gruppo da bombardamento di Alias giunge a Port Moresby ma non bombarda e biene piallato dai miei bombardieri. Le mie portaerei arrivano a destinazione ma non trovano le portaerei avversarie, che sono 300 miglia a SE della mia posizione, fuori portata per i miei aerei imbarcati. I miei Wildcat e Dauntless attaccano pertanto il gruppo di superficie presente a PM, devastandolo... Alias lamenta il mancato bombardamento di PM, chissà che è successo :humm::humm::humm:

Nuova giornata di frenetica azione. Approfittando del momento favorevole ho ordinato al gruppo di superficie mandato come scorta delle mie portaerei di effettuare un bombardamento notturno delle truppe giapponesi sbarcate a Gili Gili. Speravo di trovare anche qualche trasporto. Ecco il rapporto:

Non sono moltissimi i colpi a segno ma contanto la fatica e la scarsa esperienza dei miei equipaggi va benissimo così.

Un incrociatore pesante è stato avvistato dalla recon (in realtà lo hanno segnalato come BB, cioà corazzata) sulla via di ritorno per Rabaul, ho mandato due sottomarini ad intercettarlo...

In allegato la situazione delle perdite navali e dei miei piloti. Ho un nuovo asso , Vaught del 49° gruppo caccia, con 6 abbattimenti riconosciuti sui cieli di Port Moresby a bordo del suo P40E warhawk.

 

2 Giugno 1942

Non è successo molto, ormai quasi tutte le unità giapponesi sono fuori portata dei miei bombardieri. Fra nove giorni mi arriveranno l'Enterprise e la Hornet e potrò pensare seriamente a qualche offensiva. I miei sottormarini hanno fallito l'ingaggio della fantomatica corazzata nemica (che poi è sicuramente un incrociatore pesante), li ho posizionati nello stretto di rabaul dove sono sicuro che transiterà. 3 Giugno 1942

Un altra giornata di duri scontri sui cieli di Port Moresby. La grande base alleata è stata attaccata da un nutrito gruppi di bombardieri giapponesi, scortati da una trentina di zero, provenienti da Rabaul. Per l'ennesima volta, i miei piloti hanno combattuto eroicamente e i giapponesi hanno dovuto pagare un duro pedaggio:

La fortuna questa volta è stata dalla mia parte, dato che è giunta notizia al comando alleato che la base nemica di Lae, causa maltempo, non era operativa, nonostante il grosso numero di apparecchi nemici (per lo più caccia) che la recon aveva fotografato nei giorni precedenti. Molto probabilmente il maltempo ha impedito un attacco combinato da parte delle forze giapponesi, salvando parecchie vite fra i piloti alleati.
Vaught ha aggiunto un altra "tacca" sul suo P40 (ora ha 7 abbattimenti confermati) mentre Barnett e Landers entrano a far parte dell'esclusivo club degli assi, rispettivamente con 7 e 5 "tacche". Tutti pilotano un P40, probabilmente il miglior aereo alleato della prima parte del conflitto.

La cattiva notizia invece è la mancata intercettazione dell'incrociatore nemico diretto a rabaul. I miei sub erano posizionati correttamente ma non c'é stato l'ingaggio. Ho deciso di puntare il tutto per tutto dirigendo i miei sub fino nel porto di Rabaul, dove sono state segnalate grosse unità nemiche.

 

4-5 Giugno 1942

Questi due giorni sono stati massacranti per i piloti alleati, viste i continui bombardamenti e sweep giapponesi su Port Moresby, da Lae e Rabaul. La vittoria, in entrambe le giornate, è stata giapponese. Ho perso un grosso quantitativo di aerei e piloti che non posso rimpiazzare a causa della scarsità di velivoli disponbili. Dopo il primo attacco del 3, respinto, ho intuito quale sarebbe stata l'antifona dei giorni successivi e avevo deciso il trasferimento della maggior parte dei bombardieri da PM alle basi sulle coste australiane, lasciando a PM solo caccia e un paio di gruppi di bombardieri. Nonostante queste precauzioni le mie perdite sono state pesanti, dato che Alias ha dato a fondo a tutto ciò che aveva:

6-7 Giugno 1942

I giapponesi hanno concesso - stranamente - due giorni di tregua alla base di Port Moresby e i miei piloti hanno potuto tirare un po' il fiato.
La condizione dei miei squadroni è al momento drammatica, dato che ho utilizzato tutti i rimpiazzi e buona parte dei miei aerei migliori sono danneggiati o distrutti. Su una quarantina di P40 rimasti, solo 19 sono operativi. Devo basare la mia difesa su squadroni di Kittyhawk giunti dall'Australia, cosa che non aumenta di certo il morale delle mie truppe...
Dai pochi indizi che ho a disposizione, anche i giapponesi sembrano a corto di aerei. Una mia recon su Rabaul ha mostrato una CAP di Nate invece che di Zero. In generale, gli zero sembrano essere spariti, probabilmente Alias starà reintegrando gli squadroni e facendo riposare i piloti per riprendere gli attacchi.
Nel frattempo, Alias ha cambiato strategia ed ha trasportato delle truppe sfruttando il "Tokyo Express". Goodenough island è stata catturata il 6, mentre il 7 sono iniziati i primi sbarchi nemici a Buma.

12-13-14 Giugno 1942

La giornata del 12 ha visto il proseguire degli attacchi su PM. Non avendo più caccia operativi, l'unica difesa contro i bombardieri nemici è stata affidata alla contraerea.

Nella giornata del 12 ho spostato le mie due nuove portaerei, l'Enterprise e la Hornet, a 120 miglia a sud di Lunga, nella speranza di sorprendere il naviglio giapponese impegnato a Guadalcanal. Tale mossa metteva seriamente a rischio le mie portaerei, perché le portaerei giapponesi sarebbero potute intervenire da nord (almeno una era segnalata nella rada di Rabaul) e avrei rischiato di essere attaccato dai Betty e Nell di stanza a Rabaul. Ho deciso lo stesso di rischiare e mi è andata bene. Ecco infatti il rapporto del 13.

Il 13 non ci sono stati bombardamenti su PM, e io ne ho approfittato per finire di evacuare i resti dei miei squadroni aerei.

Il 14 i bombardamenti sono ripresi, stavolta sulle mie unità terrestri a PM. I risultati sono stati lievi.

Segnalo anche un quasi colpo fortunato dell'I-28, appostato tra Lunga e l'Australia. Ha tentato di silurare un cacciatorpediniere, in realtà queste navi erano la scorta delle mie nuove portaerei. Fortunatamente ha sbagliato bersaglio e sbagliato mira.

Per ora sono sulla difensiva, ho deciso di riunire le mie portaerei a Cairn e poi al limite pianificare un offensiva. Sicuramente Alias sta pianificando qualcosa, sembra molto aggressivo.

 

15-16-17-18 Giugno 1942

Turni tranquilli, sia io che Alias stiamo riorganizzando le forze e pianificando nuove offensive. Alias ha attaccato Port Moresby con i suoi bombardieri più volte, ormai l'aeroporto è sguarnito e l'attenzione del mio avversario sembra essere rivolta a bombardare le mie unità presenti piuttosto che mantenere fuori uso la pista. Questa disattenzione potrebbe costargli cara, ho in mente una sorpresina per il prossimo turno.
Le mie CV, divise in 2 gruppi, si mantengono a circa 250 miglia dai porti australiani, pronte ad entrare in azione in caso di bisogno. Per ora non vedo il caso di rischiare...

 

19-20-21 Giugno 1942


Il 19 ho trasferito un gruppo di neo arrivati P39 (circa una settantina di aerei) a Port Moresby (le piste erano semi funzionanti) per tentare di sorprendere i bombardieri nemici. Purtroppo i bombardieri non si sono alzati dalle basi, probabilmente perché avvisati dai ricognitori da Lae della presenza di caccia nemici.
Ho ovviamente ritrasferito tutto al sicuro sulle basi della costa australiana perché sapevo che restare a PM avendo perso la sorpresa sarebbe stato un massacro e avrei rischiato di perdere troppi caccia. La reazione giapponese infatti non si è fatta aspettare e il 20 un nutrito raid giapponese ha messo fuori uso la base:

I giorni successivi, i raid si sono ripetuti: Alias non vuole correre più il rischio e vuole mantenere Port Moresby fuori gioco (oltre a consumarmi i preziosi rifornimenti).

Per ora sto a guardare dato che non posso prendere iniziative, ho pochi aerei per un eventuale contrattacco.

 

22 Giugno 1942

Varie flotte di navi da guerra sono state avvistate un centinaio di miglia a S - SW di Gili Gili. Un ricognitore ha poi mandato il seguente messaggio:

PBY Catalina has spotted Kaga at 56,96

Alias ha mosso le portaerei dunque ed è probabile che sia in procinto di compiere un'importante azione su Port Moresby. Probabilmente un bombardamento navale, nella peggiore delle ipotesi uno sbarco anfibio su larga scala. In ogni caso sono pronto a reagire. Cooktown è stracolma di aerei, sono al limite previsto dalle house rule che ci siamo autoimporti (Max aerei = 50 x lv areoporto). Ho spostato qualche squadrone di Hudson I per sfruttare il loro maggior raggio (10). Le portaerei sono a 120 miglia a E di Cairn e pronte ad entrare in azione.
I prossimi turni chiariranno meglio il quadro...

 

23 giugno 1942

Due gruppi di superficie giapponesi sono arrivati nel cuore della notte ed hanno aperto il fuoco con tutti i cannoni. Port Moresby è stata devastata. Le navi nemiche hanno abbandonato la zona e si sono portate nuovamente ad un centinaio di miglia a sud - sud ovest di Gili Gili, fuori dalla portata dei miei bombardieri. Non ho più avvistamenti della/e portaerei giapponesi precedentemente avvistata in zona. Un ricognitore ha segnalato una CV nemica nella rada di Lunga.

24-25-26 Giugno 1942

Continuano i bombardamenti su Port Moresby, prevalentemente sulle mie unità terrestri. La base è fuori gioco e alla guarnigione è stato richiesto di resistere ad ogni costo in caso di eventuale sbarco giapponese. Eventuali rifornimenti, Zero nemici permettendo, verranno recapitati tramite un ponte aereo.
Il 26 l'SS Greenling, un mio sottomarino in pattugliamento 60 miglia a SW di Gili Gili è stato attaccato da due distinti gruppi di cacciatorpedinieri giapponesi.

Nonostante i colpi subiti, il sottomarino dovrebbe farcela a rientrare a Cairn per le riparazioni (40 sys e 40 float). Ad attaccare il mio sub sono stati cacciatorpedinieri provenienti da tre grandi gruppi navali giapponesi, all'interno dei quali è stata segnalata almeno una portaerei, la Akagi. Dei piovaschi hanno impedito ad alcuni miei Hudson di attaccare le navi nemiche. Non ho idea di quante portaerei Alias abbia mobilitato (e il livello della sua CAP), ma molto probabilmente ne ha in zona più di una. Ho deciso di muovere le mie a 180 miglia a E NE di Cairn per tentare un ingaggio qualora l'occasione fosse propizia. Mi aspetto un nuovo bombardamento navale di port moresby, o, nella peggiore delle ipotesi uno sbarco in larga scala (ma non sono stati segnalati AK o AP). Tutti i bombardieri disponibili e con autonomia sufficiente ad attaccare le coste occidentali della nuova guinea sono stati spostati a Cooktown e sono in stato di massima allerta.
Con Port Moresby si decide la partita IMHO...
