Se sbucano le Essex americane (non ne ho traccia per ora) sarà un massacro ma che altro posso fare per difendere le Marshall? In una campagna giochere diversamente senza dubbio.

 

Già, questa è la cosa più limitativa delle campagne, l'obiettivo è unico e chiaro per entrambi i giocatori.

L'attacco tanto atteso di Tanaka non è avvenuto a causa di nubi che hanno coperto le nostre navi rendendo impossibile il decollo degli aerei. Domani la nostra flotta proverà a passare a ridosso di Saipan prima di dirigersi verso Babeldaob dove potrà rifornirsi di carburante (ha autonomia solo per un paio di giorni di navigazione!)

A Saipan altra giornata di furiosi combattimenti e solito copione: i nostri cannoni che danneggiano decine di navi nemiche durante gli sbarchi, l'aviazione nemicha che martella da Tinian le nostre difese e i combattimenti metro per metro su tutta l'isola. I nostri soldati preferiscono perire piuttosto che indietreggiare ed anche le perdite nemiche cominciano ad essere numerose!

4 Luglio 1944

L'attacco di Tanaka è avvenuto ma i nostri pochi aerei imbarcati non hanno colpito nulla! Ora le CV si allontaneranno per rifornire mentre l'Haruna tenterà un'ultima battaglia contro i cargo nemici a Saipan. I cannoni di grosso calibro non hanno più munizioni ma ogni danno arrecato potrà ritardare la fine a Saipan.
Oggi gli americani hanno conquistato altro terreno, siamo stati costretti a ritirarci sull'ultima linea di difesa fortificata. Alcune unità si stanno letteralmente annientando sul posto piuttosto di arrendersi ma i divari di mezzi è troppo forte per resistere ancora a lungo. Il comando mi ha chiesto se volessi partire con uno degli ultimi aerei per Guam ma resterò qui con i miei uomini fino alla fine!

Per un problema alle caldaie l'Haruna non è riuscita a portare il suo attacco ed ora si sta ritirando per unirsi alla Yamato ed al resto della flotta per un eventuale disperato attacco, ma le portaerei americane si stanno riavvicinando.

Qui a Saipan si combatte ad ogni ora del giorno e della notte senza risparmiarsi. Oramai su tutta l'isola è rimasto solo 1 carro armato funzionante dei 39 disponibili prima dello sbarco. Il loro sacrificio ha permesso di fermare molte volte i carri d'assalto americani ma ora come potremo fermarli?

6 - 11 Luglio 1944

Sono rientrato ora da un lungo periodo in prima linea per dare coraggio ai nostri valorosi soldati ma la situazione qui a Saipan è disperata. Anche l'ultima linea di difesa è caduta, ora si combatte all'aperto e abbiamo perdite mostruose.
La guarnigione dell'isola che contava quasi 40.000 uomini prima dello sabrco nemico ora arriva a 23.000, tra cui moltissimi feriti.
La nostra flotta ha cercato in questi giorni di ritardare i continui afflussi di uomini e mezzi nemici ma ora che sono di nuovo apparse le portaerei nemiche ha fatto rotta per Truk (dove potranno rifornire anche i grossi calibri).
La nostra aviazione ha subito gravi perdite dato che l'aeroporto di Tinian può contare su quasi 200 aerei nemici, tra cui un centinaio di moderni caccia superiori ai nostri Zero.
Non credo che resisteremo ancora per molto ma abbiamo fermato per oltre 40 giorni l'offensiva nemica catalizzando tutti i loro sforzi.

 

12 Luglio 1944

Credo che sia questione di ore, i combattimenti sono arrivati solo a poche centinaia di metri dal comando. Oggi abbiamo perso altri 1000 uomini, restano poche migliaia di soldati ancora in grado di combattere. La 43° divisione, su cui poggiava tutta la nostra difesa, è ridotta ad un'unità fantasma.

A Truk la nostra flotta cominata è stata attaccata dagli aerei lanciati da CV nemiche. Una bomba ha colpito la Chitose (ma è ancora operativa) ma tutte le restanti navi sono rimaste illese. Domani ho inviato i pochi zero ancora in grado di volare a Truk per cercare di respingere i nuovi attacchi aerei nemici che sicuramente proveranno ad affondare la nostra flotta. Potremo contare su 140 caccia...tutto quello che rimane della nostra gloriosa flotta aerea della marina!!!

 

13 Luglio 1944

Oggi è un triste giorno per la nostra marina.
La difesa che abbiamo predisposto a Truk è risultata del tutto insufficiente contro centinaia di aerei americani che in ben quattro riprese hanno attaccato le nostre navi. Nonostante il valore dei nostri piloti e la contraerea del porto bombe e siluri hanno colpito ripetutamente le nostre navi. Molti gli aerei nemici abbattuti ma il loro potenziale sembra infinito mentre la nostra aviazione è ridotta a poche decine di aerei in grado di volare.
A fine giornata risultano affondate le portaerei leggere Zuiho e Chitose, la corazzata Haruna e gli incrociatori Tone e Haguro.
Tutte le altre navi sono gravemente danneggiate e sono all'ancora in porto, un'altra giornata come questa e avremo perso l'intera flotta.
Domani tutte le navi in grado di salpare cercheranno l'ingaggio notturno contro le CV americane che sono a sole 120 miglia dall'isola.

Non so se però saprò mai l'esito della battaglia di domani ma forse è un bene: oggi abbiamo perso moltissimi uomini (siamo meno di 19.000 soldati ora sull'isola) anche se i nostri genieri sono riusciti a ricostruire una debole linea fortificata a tempo di record! Sono uomini straordinari e non si meritano un destino così triste.

Siamo all'atto finale a Saipan, anche oggi abbiamo resistito ma le perdite sono enormi. Altri 2000 caduti in un solo giorno...ma non possiamo arrenderci visto che è la nostra flotta che ci da l'esempio. A Truk l'incrociatore Maya e nove caccia hanno impegnato da soli l'intera flotta nemica, ingaggiando nella notte una TF avversaria e poi combattendo contro centinaia di aerei nemici, preferendo la morte alla resa!

A Truk la nostra flotta è stata annientata: i pochi caccia ancora in grado di volare nulla hanno potuto con i centinaia di aerei nemici. Solo la Yamato è ancora a galla nel porto ma i danni sono molto estesi.
Oggi però un nostro sottomarino è riuscito a colpire con due siluri una grande portaerei di classe Essex, che però non è affondata.

Saipan ha resistito un altro giorno. Oramai gli uomini abili a combattere sono scesi a meno di mille ma abbiamo guadagnato un altro giorno.
Questa resistenza ha avuto conseguenze nefaste per gli americani: oggi sono sbarcati a Guam ma in numero insufficiente e per non essere travolti dalle nostre truppe hanno preferito lasciare la spiaggia! Il sacrificio di Saipan ha salvato Guam.
La flotta USA continua a martellare le navi ancorate a Truk: oggi è affondato un sottomarino oramai inservibile ma credo che anche la possente Yamato non potrà incassare tante bombe ancora!

E' una bella e afosa mattina d'estate quando il giornalista Ikegami Akira sbarca a Saipan.
Sono passati oltre trent'anni dalla fine della guerra nel Pacifico e mai sono state condotte ricerce approfondite sulla fine di molti soldati dell'esercito imperiale giapponese che combatterono fino all'ultimo uomo per difendre le Marianne dall'invasione americana.
D'improvviso il suo cameramen arriva correndo. E' talmente agitato che Akira non riesce a capire nulla, intuisce solo che qualcosa di importante sta per accadere.
Infatti all'alba durante delle ricerche nella parte interna dell'isola sono stati scoperti dei tunnel che erano stati chiusi dai bulldozer americani durante la battaglia ed ora tornavano a rivedere la luce per la prima volta da allora.
Al loro interno si trovavano sicuramente i resti di molti soldati connazionali che finalmente avrebbero ricevuto degna sepoltura ed ai familiari sarebbero arrivati i pochi loro effetti personali.
Akira aspettò che i tunnel venissero dichiarati come sicuri, non un minuto di più.
La fortuna quel giorno lo baciò: senza saperlo era entrato nella stanza del comando della 31^ Armata. Quello che aveva di fronte ai suoi occhi era il cadavere del generale Isamu. Accanto a lui il suo diario con la cronostoria della battaglia per Saipan: l'ultima pagina riportava...

19 Luglio 1944
Oggi sarà l'ultima mia testimonianza della nostra eroica resistenza a Saipan.
Gli americani hanno conquistato quasi tutta l'isola. I nostri soldati si sono sacrificati fino all'ultimo ma non è stato possibile vincere questa battaglia.
La nostra flotta è stata distrutta dalla superiorità delle portaerei nemiche: nell'impossibilità di ricevere rinforzi dall'esterno abbiamo fatto forza solo sulle nostre forze fino allo stremo ma ora tutto è perduto...tranne l'onore.
Spero che queste poche righe arrivino alle future generazioni, sarebbe triste che nessuno conosca come il Giappone abbia combattuto qui!

 

La partita si è conclusa con una "Minor Victory" per gli alleati.
Ho tenuto testa al mio avversario fino a 3/4 della partita, dove come punti vittoria ero ancora in vantaggio ma alla fine l'usura dei mezzi aerei nipponici si è fatta sentire e la partita è stata un monologo USA.
Arrivate di nuovo nelle Marianne le CV USA, hanno prima neutralizzato le mie forze aeree e poi si sono dedicate alla caccia libera contro la flotta giapponese totalmente indifesa e impossibilitata ad uscire dallo stretto scenario.
Una ad una le mie CV sono state colate a picco insieme alle corazzate: le perdite aeree nemiche erano sempre superiori alle mie (alla fine ho perso 1200 aerei contro 1700 del mio avversario) ma i mezzi a disposizione degli americani sembravano non esaurirsi mai e ho perso 2000 punti vittoria in meno di una settimana.
Sul terreno Saipan è caduta tardi rispetto a quanto accadde nella realtà (ben 10 giorni dopo) e questo mi ha permesso di tenere Guam che alla fine stava resistendo bene allo sbarco nemico, ancora fermo sulla spiaggia dopo una settimana (forts 4, AV 500).

Grazie mille troppo gentile ma l'amaro in bocca rimane, ho fatto una manovra avventata verso metà luglio che mi ha costretto a riparare con la Flotta Combinata a Truk e li è stata la fine. Una volta che ho esaurito gli Zero in CAP era come un pugile messo all'angolo che aspetta la fine del round...

 

Mi è già arrivato il primo turno...adesso devo trovare il tempo di studiarmi lo scenario lato alleato
