Un debole attacco dei nostri aerei imbarcati a bordo della Mini KB, rivela a Menado la presenza di una forza navale olandese. La nostra forza d'invasione, che seguiva le nostre portaerei leggere, è quindi costretta ad invertire la rotta perchè non sufficientemente scortata. Ad aumentare il rischio per i nostri trasporti la presenza poco lontano della corazzata Prince of Wales, rilevata perchè silurata dall'equipaggio del I-123.

In Birmania viene conquistata Victoria Point mentre a Hangchow i cinesi lasciano sul campo oltre 2000 uomini dopo uno scontro contro la nostra 116° divisione di fanteria.

 

25 Dicembre 1941

I rapporti del nostro servizio segreto danno per affondata un altro incrociatore pesante americano che era stato pesantemente danneggiato nei giorni scorsi nelle Gilbert.
Salgono a 4 quindi i CA persi dagli americani dei 5 che componevano la scorta delle CV nemiche. Considerando che 8 corazzate nemiche sono state danneggiate a Pearl Harbour il 7 Dicembre, il predominio navale nel Pacifico è quasi assoluto!!!
Il comando sta quindi decidendo di accellerare i piani per assicurarsi alcune posizioni chiave nel Pacifico centrale già nelle prossime settimane, prima di tutte Midway.

 

26 Dicembre 1941

La battaglia di Menado
ore 10.20: il CA Maya seguito dal CL Kuma e DD Asakaze prende contatto con una forza nemica superiore al largo di Menado.
Il comandante Nabeshima decide di ingaggiare lo stesso battaglia allo scopo di proteggere i trasporti truppa che sono ad un giorno di distanza dalla base nemica. La lotta dura oltre un'ora e il Maya incassa per undici bordate avversarie ma anche le navi nemiche registrano forti danni alla fine dello scontro.

Non avendo più navi scorta in grado di proteggere l'invasione, abbiamo dato di nuovo ordine ai trasporti di allontanarsi, mentre Obayashi vuole tornare a Truk per rifornirsi di siluri. L'invasione di Menado e in generale delle Celebes deve essere rimandata di qualche giorno ma i danni inferti al nemico sono di sicuro importanti.
Il CA Maya farà rotta anch'esso per Truk, la sua velocità è scesa a 25 nodi.

27 Dicembre 1941
In Malesia viene conquistata Georgetown e 1500 inglesi cadono prigionieri.

Da Hong Kong è partita per Babeldaob una TF composta dalle corazzate Kongo e Haruna con gli incrociatori pesanti Mikuma, Takao e Atago. Dovranno dare supporto alle forze da sbarco nelle Celebes visto che il CA Maya sarà fuori dai giochi per diverse settimane.

Nel Borneo viene conquistata Jesselton.

A Truk arriva tra i festeggiamenti la Kido Butai, i suoi piloti sono acclamati eroi dopo i successi di PH e delle isole Gilbert. Ma quasi 70 piloti mancano all'appello: piloti esperti e difficilmente rimpiazzabili!

 

28 Dicembre 1941

Grande spavento per la portaerei leggera Ryujo che ha evitato 4 siluri lanciati da un sottomarino nemico nei pressi di Peleliu.

Nella cina una nostra operazione antipartigiana presso Tatung non ha dati i frutti sperati mentre è stata conquistata la città di Tsiaotso: qui i cinesi sono stati duramente sconfitti.

29-31 Dicembre 1941

A Manado sono sbarcati 2400 uomini della marina ma la seconda ondata non è potuta sbarcare a causa della presenza di una nuova forza navale nemica. La scorta condotta dal CA Myoko ha ben difeso le nostre navi da sbarco ma a causa della carenza di munizioni siamo stati costretti ad abbandonare la zona.
Le nostre truppe sbarcate non corrono pericoli e sono in arrivo rinforzi scortati dalla Kongo e dalla Haruna.

Siamo entrati nel secondo mese di guerra e radio Tokyo annuncia l'invasione dell'isola di Midway.
L'atollo nemico è colpito dal mare e dal cielo dalle nostre corazzate e dagli aerei della KB. I cannoni nemici però riescono a colpire seriamente 3 trasporti ed il CL Kashima che risultano in fiamme.
Nello sbarco è impegnato il 144° Reggimento di fanteria che sta combattendo con valore. I difensori sono già stati respinti verso l'interno dell'isola.
Oggi viene data anche la notizia della caduta di Manado!!!
